I grew up in softball, basketball, cheerleading, and field hockey. Once I got into high school, field hockey was the only one that stuck, but I picked up swim team and did track in the spring just to hang out with my friends (y’all know I wasn’t a runner). In my junior year, I saw people doing CrossFit on Tumblr so I dragged my older brother to the closest gym with me and I was hooked. Within a year I got my Level 1 and by halfway, through senior year of high school, I’d helped open and was co-running a CrossFit gym. It was life. Once I went to chiro school I got more into Olympic lifting and ended up lifting at University Nationals (I got to skip my finals week and everything). A hip injury took me out of my last year of school while training for the American Open.
Growing up, I was the girl picked almost last in gym class. I couldn’t run a mile to save my life and was always trying to lose weight. As I started to see what I was capable of with CrossFit and weight lifting, my focus shifted from shrinking myself and taking up less space to being as strong and fit as I could be. The best part was I got to see other people realize that same thing as I coached them.
I love the lightbulb moment when someone finally “gets it”. Whether it’s kipping on the rig, timing on a snatch, or the fact that they can do a handstand, that “ah-ha!” Moment is my favorite thing to experience with someone. For some, it’s learning a new school and for others, it’s realizing that they have a gear they can shift into that they didn’t even realize was there. I love empowering people to shift all of the reasons they think they can’t do something into the reasons why they can.
